On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed an executive bill aiming to raise the retirement age of teachers in Nigeria.
The law was passed after the Committee of the Whole considered the bill’s report on Tuesday.
On June 2, 2021, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), sent the executive bill to the Senate and House, asking to raise the retirement age for teachers in the country from 60 to 65 years. It also intends to increase the number of years of service for instructors from 35 to 40.
Buhari noted in a letter to the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, and the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, that the legislation would allow for a harmonised retirement age for teachers in Nigeria.
“Transmission of the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill 2021 to the National Assembly for consideration,” the letter stated in part.
“In accordance with Section 58 subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I submit the harmonised retirement age for teachers in Nigeria Bill, 2021, for consideration by the Senate.”
“The harmonised retirement age for teachers in Nigeria bill 2021 intends to raise the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, as well as the maximum number of years of service from 35 to 40 years.” While I appreciate your customary prompt evaluation of my submission, please accept my highest consideration, Distinguished Senate President.”
