The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) began an indefinite strike on Tuesday in response to the Federal Government’s decision to call off its proposed industrial action.
Remember that on Monday, Education Minister Adamu Adamu invited ASUP to an emergency meeting “following the Union’s threat to go on strike.”
“The meeting is intended to nip the strike in the bud,” according to the Minister, meaning to put an end to the expected action.
However, the ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, announced the directive to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, saying that the federal and state governments were joking with tertiary institutions by ignoring their demands.
He said, among other items, that the government had yet to allocate the agreed-upon revitalization funds to the education sector.
“Among our complaints is the failure to reconstitute governing councils in federal polytechnics and several state-owned institutions, resulting in disruptions in governance and administrative processes since May 2020.
“This has also jeopardized the renegotiation of the union’s 2010 deal with the government, which the government has been arbitrarily suspending for over two years,” he added.
