It is mandatory for every citizen and legal resident of Nigeria to enrol for the NIN. According to the National Identity Management Commission, The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of numbers assigned to an individual upon successful enrolment. Enrolment in this case refers to the capture of an individual’s data ranging from demographic data, fingerprints, facial capture, and digital signature. The NIN number is randomly generated, and it is issued for life.
The NIN may be used for any of the following:
- Obtaining a National e-ID card
- Travel (international passport application and acquisition)
- Opening personal bank accounts
- Getting a driver’s license
- Obtaining a Permanent Voters’ Card
- Participating in the National Health Insurance Scheme
- Payment of taxes
- Transactions related to contributory pension scheme
- Land transactions
- Access to welfare and other relevant services from the Nigerian Government, etc.
The NIN is very unique, and this means that it can never be reassigned to someone else once it has been assigned to a person. The aim is to create and maintain a correct and current database of every person that is from or legally lives in Nigeria.
The NIMC National ID Card
The NIMC national ID card is the final Identity card issued by the National Identity management commission. Most recruitment and admission opportunities require some form of national Identity card as proof of the applicant’s identity.
The NIN Slip
The NIN slip is issued when the applicant comes to collect his/her NIN number. This slip is used temporarily until the NIMC identity card is gotten.
