Beyond the Classroom, a non-governmental organization, has trained 6,000 youngsters in Nigeria on COVID-19 safety standards in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation.
The community involvement was part of the Mastercard Foundation’s COVID-19 public awareness campaign, which aimed to provide African countries and communities with accurate, timely, and life-saving information on COVID-19.
At Lagos and Nassarawa states, the concept was implemented in 11 public and private schools. Each child received a free COVID-19 safety pack, which included a book authored by Raquel Daniel, the founder of Beyond the Classroom, titled “There is a New Virus in Town.”
Daniel added that students were taught the importance of washing their hands with soap or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers on a frequent basis.
He also emphasized the importance of wearing nose masks correctly in public and maintaining a social distance of at least one metre.
He urged the students to persuade their parents and guardians to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Chidinma Lawanson, the Mastercard Foundation’s Nigeria Country Head, said the community involvement was the second part of the awareness campaign targeted at educating youngsters aged seven to 14 on preventive measures.
She explained that 3,000 children were initially engaged in the first phase of the project last year.
