On Tuesday, approximately 20,000 students staged a peaceful protest on the institution’s campus in Wilberforce Island, Amassoma in the state’s Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, calling on the state government to compel the management to reverse its decision on the students.
They also denounced the institution’s prolonged prohibition on Students Union activities, claiming that the block was imposed to stifle dissent and prevent the closing of the fees portal for former students.
The disgruntled students demanded that Governor Douye Diri fire the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo, who is seeking a second term, claiming that his policies are detrimental to the school.
Some students who requested anonymity reported that engineering students were had to pay up to N30,000 for their uniforms, while students from other faculties were just required to pay N2,000.
“The introduction of school uniforms was a symbol of high-handedness by the school administration and an obvious exhibition of tyranny,” they claim.
Early this year, the institution’s management came under fire for discriminating against a physically challenged man who served as the school’s deputy bursar, sparking a protest.
The individual was refused the opportunity to interview for the post of bursar and has been suspended as a result of the protest, though Diri has spoken to management about the situation.
Many stakeholders, including parents and students, are concerned about the school’s increasingly bad trends.
According to investigations, the decision on the uniforms was made to prevent events such as the accidental killing of an Engineering student at a restaurant and another by supposed cultists earlier this year.
The university administration, on the other hand, argued that the issue of indecent dress by female students spurred the implementation of student uniforms.
When contacted, NDU Public Relations Officer Idoni Indezi claimed the closing of the fees site was a school policy, but that it was still open for this session.
Indezi stated that the school administration has not set uniform fees and that departmental and faculty discussions are still occurring.
