Primary education is the first form of formal education that a person experience. It is usually after nursery school or pre-school, and before secondary school. Every child has a basic right to primary education. With the introduction of the 6-3-3-4 education system in Nigeria, it is mandatory for a child to attend six (6) years of primary education.

Subjects taught in primary schools include Mathematics, English, Agricultural Science, Home Economics, the three main indigenous languages in Nigeria (Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo), and other subjects like computer science, French, etc.

Every primary school student is expected to write a Common Entrance Examination in order to proceed from Primary School to Secondary School. Sometimes, private schools organise their common entrance exams to admit students in to their schools.

Public Primary Schools

The Nigerian government has established many primary schools in different locations all over the country. These schools are called Public or in some cases Federal schools. In these schools, students are not expected to pay school fees. They are fully funded by the government. However, the students may be asked to pay certain dues annually or termly to cover for some small expenses of the school such as teaching materials, etc.

Private Primary Schools

These schools are now very popular, and exist virtually everywhere in Nigeria. Private schools are owned by individuals, religious communities, or private organisations. Students who attend these schools pay varying sums per term as tuition or school fees. These fees majorly go into providing the best form of education for the students.
