The Senate approved a bill on Wednesday that would elevate Yaba College of Technology to the status of a Federal University of Technology. A bill to create the Federal University of Birnin-Kebbi in Kebbi State was also passed.
Following the assessment of two different recommendations by the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, the authorisation for the founding of both institutions was granted.
Senator Nora Daduut (APC, Plateau South), who submitted the report on behalf of the Committee’s Chairman, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, said the Federal University of Birnin-Kebbi will meet Nigeria’s personnel demands in the areas of geosciences and technology, as well as general agricultural practices, as a boost for solid mineral exploration, scientific and social research, Scientific and social knowledge are being used to promote cutting-edge research in Nigeria and abroad.
The lawmaker added that “the knowledge and skills acquired from the institution would contribute to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and increase Nigeria’s revenue earnings.” In addition, the lawmaker noted that “The upgrade of Yaba College of Technology to a full-fledged Federal University of Technology would boost the acquisition of scientific and technological knowledge in the country.”
