N.C.E. – Nigeria Certificate in Education

NCE stands for Nigeria Certificate in Education. It is awarded to graduates of colleges of education. It usually takes up to three years to graduate and earn an NCE Certificate.

To enrol, a student must have at least five credits in one of the eight certificates available, including West African School Certificate (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO), General Certificate Examination (GCE), etc. One must also have at least a credit in the subject one intends to teach at the school.

Some of the certificates available are:

  • Grade II Teachers’ Certificate (TC-II)
  • Pivotal Teachers’ Certificate (PTC)
  • West African School Certificate (WASC)
  • National Examination Council (NECO-SSCE)
  • General Certificate Examination (GCE)
  • National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) Certificate
  • Higher Islamic Studies Certificate (HISC)

According to the National Policy on Education, the NCE Certificate shall be the minimum qualification for all teachers in Nigerian schools. Teachers with over five years of experience can get an NCE without passing any Credits. Please note that the Nigeria Certificate of Education only allows one to work in primary and junior secondary schools.

To gain admission into a college of education, a student must take part in the UTME and post UTME admission exercises. There are over sixty (60) schools in Nigeria to explore when planning to earn an NCE degree.

With an NCE Degree, you can gain a Direct Entry admission into a university to earn a bachelor’s degree.

N.C.E. (DLS)

The NCE by Distant Learning (DLS) was introduced in 1990 in order to address the challenge of the shortage of qualified teachers in Nigeria. Fortunately, this scheme has proved to have the highest success rate for overcoming this nation-wide problem.

The NCE (DLS) provides hands-on training for teachers, where they do not have to leave their jobs in order to gain further education.

There are 345 NCE (DLS) study centres nationwide. To qualify for this certificate, those who have enrolled will spend four years in training. Each course is organized in 4 Cycles. A Cycle corresponds to a year’s work.  A maximum of 80 hours tutorial contact is permitted per subject. The contact hours have been split into two semesters of any one year.
