Lawal Oluwaseun, a 100-level student from the University of Ilorin’s Department of Accounting, has won the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria’s (CITN) Annual Tax Quiz Competition for the year 2021.
According to the UNILORIN Bulletin, Oluwaseun defeated four other contestants to win the competition, which had its final round on May 21st in Kaduna.
A 400-level Accounting student from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, a 400-level Taxation student from Nasarawa State University, an HND II Taxation student from Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, and an HND II Accounting student from Kano State were among those he defeated.
“Oluwaseun defeated a total of 176 students across the country to win this year’s competition where he was presented with a trophy”.
“He also received a cash prize of N300,000, 11 taxation textbooks, and two desktop computers, one of which is to be presented to the school,” the Bulletin said.
Oluwaseun described the competition as difficult as he presented his prize to Dr. Khadijat Yahya, the institution’s Head of Accounting Department.
According to him, he competed in 2020 against 200 other contestants and made it to the final shortlist of 12 people.
He went on to say that he had to step down for a fellow UNILORIN student due to geographical zoning, but that he had a strong desire to succeed this year, which made it easier for him.
Yahya commended the student as an outstanding representative for the department and the university in her response, noting that another department student, Odusanya Gabriel, won the competition in 2020.
Other students were encouraged by the Head of Department to learn outside of the classroom, to bring value to themselves, to work extra hard to overcome hurdles, and to thrive in all of their pursuits.
