University of Lagos (UNILAG) management has approved all students to vacate the halls of residence indefinitely. Lectures for the rest of the semester will continue to be delivered virtually.
When the COVID-19 virus positivity rate reduced to around 1%, the University of Lagos started physical classes at the end of May 2021. COVID-19 protocols were continuing to be enforced by University Management in all teaching and learning environments, as well as student living halls.
In addition, the COVID-19 vaccination was made available to the staff and students through the support of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council. Lately, some students have tested positive. These pupils were taken to the right state-designated facilities, and contact-tracing allowed us to identify individuals who had been exposed and direct them to isolation.
The situation is concerning, especially given the majority of students’ unwillingness to follow the COVID-19 preventive methods.
To avoid escalation of cases on campus, the University Senate decided at an emergency meeting on Wednesday, July 14th, 2021 that all students must vacate their residence halls by 12 p.m. on Thursday, indefinitely. With effect from July 26th, 2021, lectures will be delivered virtually for the remainder of the semester.
