The attention of Abia State University’s governing authorities has been drawn to an unsubstantiated online article on social media alleging harassment of students by some university lecturers in the form of selling books, handouts, or pressuring them to pay money to pass tests or present assignments. This is false because the university has prohibited lecturers from selling handouts, while the university’s book review committee manages all publications and sales to students are only made through the university bookshop. However, the university administration, led by the student-friendly and staff-welfare-oriented Vice Chancellor, distinguished Professor O. M Ogbulu, promises not to brush this accusation under the rug, promising that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that anyone found culpable will face the full wrath of the law, as stipulated in the university rule. The administration of the Vice Chancellor, distinguished Professor Ogbulu, reiterates its zero tolerance for any kind of exploitation by any university staff member and will continue to actively follow measures put in place to fully eliminate any such related activities.  It should be noted that the Vice Chancellor recently approved a reduction in the sum charged for certificate verification. It can be remembered that the vice Chancellor recently accepted a reduction in the sum charged for certificate verification from 30,000naira to 10,000naira, as well as free printing of admission letters and post-UTME results, all in an effort to reduce the financial strain on parents and students. As a result, the university encourages parents or students who have substantive proof of exploitation by any university staff member to report it, as timely and effective steps would be taken to discipline those found culpable.  Please, all parties involved should be properly guided.
